When Stephanie Lindley, long-time Greensboro based theatre professional, returned in 2022 after five years in New Jersey, she immediately met with every Greensboro arts leader to learn about the Master Arts Plan and all of the unfortunate changes in the theatre community.

After speaking with the Arts Commission, Director of the Arts Council, new leader of Creative Greensboro, and testifying before the City Council, Stephanie began to gather a consortium of theatre leaders from every university in the Triad, to discuss the possibility of creating a new professional equity theatre in Greensboro from the inside out - rather than Triad Stage’s outside-in approach.

From those discussions, a thick, comprehensive business plan was written in consultation with a SCORE mentor to create The Public Theatre of Greensboro.

Incorporated in July 2024 as a NC nonprofit, The Public Theatre of Greensboro is creating an infrastructure that operates using a non-hierarchical structure, in an effort to forge a new, and more sensible operational approach for professional creative nonprofits.

The Public Theatre of Greensboro is raising funds for professional theatre productions as well as securing a space with rehearsal studios, shop, storage and offices that can be shared with local community theatre groups.

The first Public Theatre of Greensboro play will premiere in 2026.
